Remember a time when your heart was fully open, a continuous stream of love flowing through. Picture yourself. See your face. Notice your expression. Feel the energy in your body. Sense the aliveness, the freedom, the total acceptance of yourself, others and all of life.
Love is an awakening that springs from our very core. It is an effortless happening. When the heart opens, love naturally spreads like the fragrance of a blooming flower. This is the transformative power of love. We see and experience everything in its true essence. Fears simply vanish. We glide into our day with lightness, ease and a delightful sense of humor. In this space of love, miracles come rushing in.
Now feel your mother’s love, and feel your love for her. Visualize your dear, sweet mother - the one who brought you into this world, who held you in her arms, who fed you, who kept you warm and safe. See her looking at you, softly gazing into the eyes of her beautiful child. Love is born in the sacred womb of our family. The warmth of our home, the caress of our mother, the food in our belly, the peacefulness of our sleep in our soft bed reminds us of the love in our universe, this love that we breathe, this love that we are.
This love is our foundation - our life’s blood. It has given us the courage to look out into our world, to step into the unknown, to trust. Harmony in the family has great spiritual power, providing an opening for grace to flourish within us, and then to expand out and touch our whole world family…..
We are love. In those precious moments when our heart is fully open, we experience our wholeness. This is why love is so blissful. It creates the union, the oneness, which is the very purpose of yoga. Yoga means “union with God.” Through the practice of yoga, we learn to return again and again to the source within.
When we extend this awareness, this “being”ness, into the experience of serving and loving others, we can deeply relax, knowing we are doing the very best we could possibly do for our spiritual unfoldment. We can inhale fully and release our breath with a heartfelt sigh, letting go of all concerns, struggles, and worries of life.
The yoga of love and gratitude is a way of life. It is an inner attitude, an inner calling. It is the act of fearlessly loving, bringing harmony into every interaction, every situation, and every experience.
Self-love is the ground, the foundation, on which our devotion stands. To experience the heart of yoga, however, we must give our love away. True devotion is communicating with love - being compassionate, understanding, and forgiving, sharing a heartfelt smile and reaching out. It’s being gentle and conscious in our actions, thoughts and speech. It’s appreciating, serving, teaching and inspiring - being humble, empowering others, allowing everyone to give and contribute to us. It’s expressing our love in infinitely creative and heart-stirring ways - being fearless, returning again and again to love.
Love requires continuous practice. When we love ourself, we naturally love others as well. Loving is complete flexibility. It is adjusting, adapting, and accepting anything and everything that happens to us and around us at any given time.
Grace is a timeless gift, which comes through the openness of vulnerability. It comes through gratitude and faith, through prayer and meditation, and through surrender. Grace is not achievable. It is not a reward or the result of hard work. It is simply a happening. When we are empty we behold the grace. It is already here. We are already home.
Miracles are happening all around us all the time. Only when we develop an attitude of gratitude are we able to notice them. Gratitude and faith open our inner vision. We see the reality that life is. Love surrounds us, encircles us, endlessly. The whole universe stands behind us. We feel so powerful! Faith inspires gratitude, and gratitude strengthens faith.
It is essential to acknowledge and honor the grace present in each moment. The more we meditate upon gratitude, the more it grows within and around us, and the more rooted our faith becomes - our faith in life itself. We must learn to pay attention to all the good things we are doing for ourselves, and the many blessings that are present in our life. Gratitude and grace go hand in hand. Grace comes when we are grateful for what we already have, in this moment.
There is so much happiness and love in this life. There is also pain and struggle, and the many challenges of being human. Our natural tendency is to retreat from discomfort, to fight it, to hide it, to run from it. What would it mean to accept it? How might our lives be altered if we could simply shift the context in which we hold our pain?
Pain and struggle are, in truth, our very best friends, and we should bow down before them, with folded palms, in gratitude for the awesome blessings they bestow. When we remember why we are here, that everything happening to us and everything we experience is perfectly designed for our spiritual unfoldment, we begin to see great value in sorrow and strife. Not that we go looking for it, but when it comes, we find the space inside for acceptance and compassion, and discover creative ways to make the very best of every situation.
We must look to the great masters, who also experience trials and tribulations, yet are always in bliss. Why? Because they are totally non-resistant. They live in the moment. Every experience is just another wave that passes through them. They simply witness, not grabbing on to pleasure, and not pushing away pain. This is freedom. This is faith.
Every painful situation that we experience is designed just for us so that we may learn a very special lesson. The purpose of every lesson is to bring us deeper and deeper into faith and love. What comes through faith comes perfectly. It comes in just the right way to awaken all that needs to be awakened.
Knock at the door of love and be willing to enter. Once we pass through, we will never be the same.
